Developing an app to facilitate access to the law
DLA Piper
Since the launch of ChatGPT at the end of 2022, AI has literally exploded into the mainstream. It is being used in more and more ways, and the number of sectors impacted by its development is growing all the time.
Faced with this situation, and taking into account all the upheavals that AI will bring to our lives, the European Union has adopted legislation that seeks to provide a framework for the development of Artificial Intelligence: the EU AI Act.
This is the first major piece of legislation to regulate AI, adopted by the Parliament and the Commission. And when new legislation is published, three entities are generally concerned:
- The public,
- Companies operating in the sector covered by the legislation and which will have to apply it,
- Law firms, which will have to defend the two previous parties.
All three need to be able to access, navigate and understand this new legislation. To achieve this, one particular law firm has taken the initiative: DLA Piper.
DLA Piper is a leading international law firm with offices in North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, offering a wide range of legal services. With the publication of the EU AI Act, DLA Piper decided to launch an application accessible to all, enabling the text of this new legislation to be consulted and studied.
To achieve this, DLA Piper chose to work with Caracal Agency, and we were delighted to be able to support them in bringing this project to fruition.
Challenge
The challenge posed by this DLA Piper project was to capture all the legislation and integrate it into an application that was intuitive, fluid and easy to use.
In other words, how do you take a text of over a hundred pages and make its content easy to consult, whether on mobile or desktop, for three different audiences: lawyers, businesses and individuals?
Our methodology proved to be key to meeting this challenge and delivering a functional application within the timeframe set by DLA Piper.
Methodology
We therefore had an example on which to base our work, which was organised in two stages:
A first design stage, during which we reworked and modernised the visual aspect of the application based on DLA Piper’s graphic charter and the design of the app launched for the RGPD,
A second technical stage, during which we developed the entire application.
This two-stage process enabled us to deploy the solution expected by DLA Piper.
Solutions
Today, this application offers several functions:
It allows users to consult the entire text of the EU AI Act,
Users can search by keyword, to go directly to the articles that interest them,
Users can save and download the articles that are most useful to them,
Users can access a clear structure of the legislation,
etc.
The icing on the cake: this application is completely free, and you can find it by searching for “DLA Piper – EU AI Act” on the stores.
Impact
The impact of this application is manifold.
Firstly, DLA Piper has established itself as a legal expert and a benchmark in its market. Few law firms (if any) take the initiative of investing in the development of their own application, and what’s more, making it available to everyone free of charge.
Secondly, with this app, DLA Piper is strengthening its brand image. Especially as this is not their first application.
Thirdly, as the app has already been downloaded more than 2,000 times, it is a way for DLA Piper to attract not only new clients, but also potential new talent who want to start their career or join a new law firm to continue their professional adventure.
